By W. LUK
I have an 87 Pontiac that I cruise around on weekends. Having newer model cars with the latest in technology like HD and satellite radio, Ipod integration and Bluetooth, I was missing these conveniences on my old car. I decided to upgrade a 15 year old Kenwood system, which was already an upgrade from the original factory system to this Kenwood headunit. Installed over the weekend and played around with it for several hours. The conclusion, I am very pleased with it. Here's my review-
* HD Radio - Stations are definitely clearer, as long as the signal is good. Big difference from the old analog receiver where I would occassionally get two stations crossing over each other and a lot of static. The HD tuner is fine for my radio listening.
* Ipod integration - I tested this connection with a 2nd gen ipod and a 4th gen Ipod touch. There were no big issues. The only thing I should comment on is that the Ipod controls are switchable between the touch and the headunit (can search, select tracks, etc..) by pressing a button on the headunit, but only the headunit controls work on the older Ipod when connected. Also, if you don't have Pandora installed on your Ipod, connecting the usb will prompt you to install it.
* Pandora Radio - Works wireless via bluetooth if you have a Blackberry phone. Very cool. I have an older Blackberry, and it worked fine. Once connected via bluetooth, I can also play mp3 media from my phone. Ipod requires a usb connection for Pandora.
* BT phone - There is an external mic that plugs into the back of the unit. The mic has a double stick mount that you could stick on the dash or any location in the direction you will be speaking into. The calls are clear and the people I've called had no problems hearing me. Pairing was pretty straight forward. Answering calls can be done automatically, by number of secs or pressing a button. There is a BT phone or audio output option (Pandora) that can be set to play over front speakers only or all speakers. I had to read the manual for this information because the default is front speakers. So I manually set it to all speakers.
Sound controls are very good, and could be fine tuned to taste. There are different pre-outs available on the rear. I have the subwoofer pre-out connected to an external amplifier that drives a small sub. Gives the perfect amount of extra punch. Treble and Bass frequencies can be filtered separately if using these pre-outs.
Overall, this headunit has alot of features and configurable options. Display color can be customized to any color you like or have it scan through all the colors. I would not recommend setting all of the available options while driving. I am very satisfied with this Kenwood headunit.

By L. Kozak
Just had my Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X796 installed into my Ford Escape. Difference is like night and day when comparing the sound I had in the factory Ford system. My Ford speaker system has never had such quality run through them. The HD radio wins hands down. Crystal clear and powerful sound even at a low volume. Bluetooth is fantastic and very clear when calls come in or go out. Very easy to use. Haven't tried the Pandora feature or iPod as I need to get myself into the 21 century when it comes to these devices, but I feel that with the way this system is built, it won't fail me. Has the USB connector that makes it easy to connect a iPod or memeory stick. Has single CD player and that sounded good. The look on the dash with the random lighting display is awesome. Very stylish! Only thing I found negative about this unit, is the clock. Set it, but can't get it to show up on the dash. Maybe I need to read more about how to make it visible but if it can't be visible, I can live with this negative. All and all, this system is well worth the money for all the features that are present.

By M. Nunez
I bought the Kenwood KDC-X796 at a local retailer to replace the factory stereo on a 2002 Honda Accord. Definitely an upgrade and what a nice surprise. For one thing, HD Radio is the best kept secret for car audio. Most local radio stations have at least 3 different streams that are crystal-clear and unavailable on standard analog FM. I've also found that most of these HD stations are commercial-free. I can finally copy my MP3s to a flash drive and plug it into the front USB slot for instant playback and excellent fidelity. Bluetooth capability allows streaming audio from any Bluetooth-enabled device (I use an Android phone) and the ability to take calls via speakerphone, all controlled by the stereo. Aux input accepts a standard 3.5mm cable jack from ANY device with a stereo output. Integrated controls for iPod and Pandora are included. My 2002 Accord came preinstalled with a premium Bose speaker package, but audio was always mediocre with the factory stereo and I never understood why. Installing the KDC-X796 made all the difference and my music is now booming after all these years, with the same speakers. Customizable display color. Text display provides the title/artist/station for any song that is playing. Also comes with a remote, which I don't really use. Detachable faceplate discourages theft. Includes bass boost and equalizer presets. I no longer dread the hour-long commute to work. As is the case with most car stereos, I had to buy a separate wiring harness for 20 bucks to facilitate installation. Conclusion: Buy this car stereo, or another from the Kenwood Excelon series and you will not be disappointed!!!
